We humans come in lots of various shapes and sizes, but most of us lean toward either thinking or feeling as our primary focus while we make choices in life. As two different areas of our brains wrestle to control our awareness and our actions, we waver back and forth between emotions and our rational thoughts. The best approach is to be cognizant of the battle that will be waged by your amygdala (emotional impulses) and your cerebral cortex (reason and logic) and to plan to try to achieve some semblance of balance as you make choices, and execute your decisions in life and in business.
Sometimes people tell me they regret that they cannot master their emotions. I understand that it can be very frustrating to over-react and say something that you might regret later. I also understand that it can be very frustrating to be accused of being like a robot and operating like emotions do not compute in your thinking. Again, I like to recommend a balance. With a little bit of self-awareness and a bit of social awareness, we can begin to monitor and choose constructive, positive choices about how we will react to events, especially when they stir emotional responses. There is a time to be reasonable, and there is a time to react with empathy and show people how much you care.
I find that balance and consistency go a long way to helping a person navigate the choppy waters of human collaboration. Here’s hoping that working to achieve some consistency and balance will help you to keep yourself on the right course for having more success in getting great results as you work with the people in your life and in your business career!
